Pokémon Masters review
Pokémon Masters is a mobile strategy game for iOS and Android devices. The game is free to play and has more than 10 million downloads in Google Play with an average rating of 4.1.
Gameplay: Always Pokémon
Pokémon Masters sticks to the traditions of the Pokémon games: it is a classic turn-based strategy. You are able to collect different Pokémon, each of them having different stats and abilities and use them in turn-based battles against AI enemies. After beating the Chapter 10 of the story mode, you will be able to play in co-op multiplayer.
The gacha mechanics allow you to randomly collect different Pokémon and trainers to progress through the Pokémon Masters league. In the late game the progress slows down a lot and you will have to grind the training mode to upgrade items and progress.
Graphics: Loved Visuals
The graphics are pretty average for Pokémon games. They are of the same classic cartoony style of Pokémon and remind you of most other games from the universe. The characters are drawn nicely, and the famous ones are easily recognizable.
The backgrounds are also interesting to look at and the captions are easy to read, which is important as all the story is delivered through dialogues with other characters. The ability animations are great and the battles are a big pleasure to look at. The interface, however, gets a bit overloaded with buttons in the battle mode, but after spending some time you get used to it.
Controls: Learn It
The controls are also average for mobile turn-based strategies. You only have to prepare for a battle, select one and then select actions, when it is your turn. It might sound easy, and it is when you start the game, but to become a true Pokémon master, you will have to spend a significant amount of time learning the mechanics. It is easy to play Pokémon Masters, but it is hard to play it well.
Pros:
- Favorite Pokémon masters on mobile;
- Classic gameplay and visuals;
- The game is pretty rewarding at the start.
Cons:
- The gameplay gets pretty repetitive after a certain point;
- You will have to grind training to progress in the late game.
Good
Pokémon Masters is a decent mobile game in the Pokémon universe. It has some strong points and some disadvantages, but there are not really many Pokémon games available on mobile platforms. So if you are looking for a Pokémon game for your phone, this is your choice. In case you are just interested in turn-based strategies, there might be better alternatives available.
